In this project we learned a lot about Nuclear power, fission and fusion, and atoms, power plants, etc. Each topic we learned, we went a little into depth with, like fore example, with atoms, we learned all the units to it, and the basic history of an atom. The debate tournament was very interesting, and fun in a way. I was nervous at first that my group wouldn't finish in time all the CREWs, but we worked together and did what we needed to do in order to have all the information we needed. The fave debate questions were:
- Does nuclear energy help solve the problem of global warming? Why or why not?
- Is there a location that is fair and safe to store nuclear waste? Why or why not?
- Do the benefits of nuclear energy outweigh the benefits of renewable energy sources?
- Will nuclear fission be a limitless solution to our energy needs?
- If an accident occurs, do the possible negative outcomes outweigh the benefits of nuclear energy?
The 5 CREWs are documents in which we had to write a Claim, Reason, Evidence, and Warrant for every pro and con in every focus point for every debate question. Claim stands for a sentence in which we write a defensible statement. Then we write 3 reasons why the claim is true, which are also like a paragraph each, and we write why we think that the claim is true. After we write 3 evidence, which is the support for the three reasons you made, and in the evidence is where you include all your research. Finally the warrant is the conclusion, kind of bringing everything together in a sentence or two.
I learned a lot of new things in this project like more about all the different ways we can get renewable energy from the earth, more about the history about an atom, and a lot more about nuclear fission, fusion, and power. Something I am the most proud of from this project is the last debate we had, which was very intense and interesting, and both groups provided very good facts and points. Something challenging about this project was researching cons or pros, that I didn't agree with, because since I didn't believe in this pro/con it was difficult for me to write and give good points about it. If I were to do this project differently, I would write more on our first CREW.
